It took three tries

Wednesday evening about 8:45 pm, screams and cries of “Oh, God. Help me! Help me!” rang through the normal neighborhood noise, cries of ‘No, no, please no,’  brought neighbors to their windows and forewarned of what would come next. A boom was heard and residents hit the floor, fearing where the next shot would be aimed. And then an abnormal silence.

A young man peering out his window saw a neighbor running up to another neighbors front door, he saw the man come up behind her and shoot her from behind. He ran out to the street hoping to get the license number of the vehicle the man was in, and a man came up to him from the direction of the shooting. Without a word the man got into a red pickup truck and drove away, without turning on his headlights. Neighbors say they had seen the same truck parked in front of Amanda  Duran’s home. Her boyfriend reportedly drove the truck when he would drive her home from school.

A friend has said that he was on the phone with Amanda Duran when he heard her say “Why are you here?” Reportedly he also heard ‘Eddie’ say  “Why can’t I come over here?” Amanda then told the friend she would call him back and she hung up.

‘Eddie’ is reportedly Gilberto Cruz, 26, AKA Eduardo ‘Eddie’ Espinosa-Martinez. Amanda Jean Duran, 22, had reportedly dated Cruz, but had broken the relationship off. Reportedly the breakup was just due to normal boyfriend/girlfriend problems and Amanda Duran never expressed any fear of Cruz.

Amanda Duran was an aspiring rap artist. She was in the process of starting her own music label. She has been called friendly and outgoing, a beautiful person inside and out, reportedly she loved life and music. Amanda Duran also had her struggles, she was diagnosed with muliple sclerosis at the age of 17. But she didn’t let that deter her from her dreams or from enjoying life.

Police have arrested Gilberto ‘Eddie’ Cruz on Thursday AM. Reportedly he has confessed to the murder. Reportedly he told police he had been upset about Duran breaking off the relationship and he had been planning the murder for about a week.

Allegedly he loaded the shotgun and tried to fire, but it didn’t fire. Reportedly he and Duran struggled over the gun, then she ran to the front door. Allegedly he loaded the gun again and tried to fire, but again it didn’t go off. At the neighbor’s front door he stood several feet away from Duran, with the third shot in the gun, he pulled the trigger and the gun went off.

Cruz has been charged with murder.

I knew Amanda, she was a beautiful person. Anyone who reads this please don’t be afraid to ask questions of the people you are dating….most times you can distinguish if they are liars from the begining.

Yes PLEASE! Don’t let your heart be so open or get so desperate that you’ll just date someone for the hell of it. Take your time and don’t settle for anything less than what you want. It pays off and your life is better for it. I see a lot of relationship and domestic violence in Colorado……especially amongst young people. Be careful!!!!

I worked with Amanda for six years, off and on. She was a very sweet girl,
and I am still upset that she had to lose her life in such a senseless, tragic
way. What I would like to know is, why aren’t the newspapers covering the
trial, which began Monday, July 16th, and may or may not be over. Those of
us who knew and loved our friend but cannot get to the trial for whatever
reason, would love to be kept informed. I hate to keep calling her mom for
updates. It’s an intrusion into her personal suffering. Who does one call where they can talk to an actual person about the lack of news coverage?

One thing you can try is to contact your local newspapers and/tv sources and see if they can give you any info- sometimes they have email addresses on their websites. Another possibility is to go to the county court website and see if they have court info online. If so you enter his name and follow it. They don’t put a lot of info in the court sites, but you can get some info.

I didn’t know Amanda but her uncle’s sister-in-law. After working in the criminal justice system for years nothing surprises me. There are many women with abusive relationships. We need to protect ourselves and if something isn’t right beware. Do we need to do a criminal background on people we become attached to ? I heard that the state paid to have his parents come from Mexico for the trial? This is just wrong. Plus the state of Colorado will pay for this person’s care while incarcerated, great health care and house him for many years as he is young. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

I knew amanda as well, and she was an extrordinarily beautiful soul, she never should have been taken from us. I am not sure if anyone has read but if you google amanda’s name there are ongoing news articles about her. I was suprised myself at why she wasn’t on news shows. He was sentenced to life in prison they will not return him to mexico even though he was found to be here illegally. Another website for an organization is using her story, among others to show the gov’t this is a threat, with illegals. Amanda will not be forgotten, I know some people that were very very close to amanda, and they will be working to get her album out that she was trying to get finished and there is a tribute song to her done by both her producer and childhood friend and rap artist FAT LEE. If you want any information on getting a copy of the song, for those of you who knew her, I will be glad to get you the info for who to contact, email me at twenty8graphics@yahoo.com. Peace, love and faith. RIP Amanda – miss you!

Amanda Jean I still remember your pure and innocent lovely soul , I cry for your life and look forward to the day of meeting you in Heaven, may God never grant mercy or forgiveness to that evil man who caused such pain to you, your Mom, and our family and your true friends, Amanda I miss you even though I could never see you since you were such a tiny adorable gorgous toddler as I had to move away from Colorado. I cannot begin to fathom the hurt your parents must feel and my heart pines for their peace.

A sad, but common story. I’m still divided, where to start to see this through.
Easy access to weapons, is part of the problem. It’s not that easy to try to kill someone with your hands, and that will stop already most of the people that are happy to pull the trigger. But then what makes a relationship turn this way..what makes a person so miserable that killing is the only way out?
