“I just don’t know what to make of all this.”

Joshua Balling, 19, and his girlfriend Amber Justus,19, met when they were 13 years old but didn’t start dating until they were 18. They were hoping to get married next year. For a while she had moved into his mother’s with him, but two months ago they got an apartment together.

The couple were expecting a baby, though she was only 3 months pregnant. Balling seemed to be excited about the pregnancy.

According to Justus, they would argue sometimes. And that sometimes they would push each other around. Justus even says that after he punched her, she would slap him. Allegations have been made by Ballings brother that she beat Balling.  She also says that when Balling was drinking he would sometimes pick fights with her, her stepbrother, or the neighbors. But she says that nothing had ever happened like it did Saturday night.

She says that Balling had several cupfuls of rum, and then went into a ‘drunken rage’. She says that he wrestled with her 13 year old stepbrother first. Then she says that he had used his fists on her. “He was all messed up and just kicked in the door. He started yelling at me. I stood up to get away from him (and) he punched me in my stomach,” . It has been reported that he punched her three times in the stomach, and that he knocked a door off the hinges to get to her. Balling ran away and Justus called police.

Justus was taken to the hospital and they were unable to find a hearbeat for the baby.

Joshua Balling has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of the fetus.

Justus has told reporters, “I don’t think he meant to do it, but he did it,” “I still love him,” “I just don’t know what to make of all this.”

That’s not an uncommon reaction. Often the excuse will be “he was drunk, that is what did it”. Experts say there is nothing to indicate that drinking causes domestic violence. But they caution “men who batter frequently use alcohol abuse as an excuse for their violence. They attempt to rid themselves of responsibility for the problem by blaming it on the effects of alcohol.”

My view of it is that alcohol lowers inhibitions and often actions will become more exaggerated. Therefore, if a person has anger issues and a tendency toward violence and they then start drinking, there is more likely to be a domestic violence episode. So one does not cause the other, but they each contribute. But the drinking would not cause the violence, unless there was a tendency already there. And if they became angry enough to lose control, they could become violent even if they weren’t drinking.

All charges have been dropped against Joshua Balling. He has been released from jail and is now with his family.

Justus has gone to police and admitted that she lied. Her sister convinced her to go to police and tell the truth.

Balling admits that he Justus got into a fight. But he says that she is the one who began hitting herself in the stomach.

Doctors have also verified Balling’s innocence. They say the fetus had been dead for at least three weeks at the time of the incident.

Some sources say that Justus is now recieving counseling.

I am glad that Justus finally came forward with the truth. In telling the story she told, she could have ruined Ballings life. There is no indication as yet, as to whether there will be any charges filed against Justus for the false report.

    Check out this update:

Turns out that Justus had lied about the death of her unborn child. Balling is now out of jail and the charges have been dropped.

…I really hope this young woman gets all the help she needs. And for the safety and well being of her young child, I hope she has someone who is capable of caring for him while she gets that help.
