Last Friday, it is believed that an unnamed man went to bed, and his wife Edna May Sanders headed for the kitchen. Police believe that once there, Sanders poured about 2 quarts of oil in a pot, brought it to a simmer, then carried it to the bedroom where she allegedly proceeded to pour it on her sleeping husband.
The husband suffered 3 rd degree burns on his head, face, chest and arms. The husband was wearing blue jeans, and police believe that protected his lower body. There are more graphic details about his injuries in the articles……let’s just say it was really bad.
The couple had reportedly only been married a short time. There were two children in the home, and after dropping the burning oil, Sanders allegedly fled the home with the two children.
The husband was airlifted to a burn center, his condition is being listed as day-to-day.
Sanders is still on the run with the two children. When captured, she will be facing felony charges of aggravated assault and domestic violence. Police are not sure what led up to the assault.
First of course is fear for the children. Sanders allegedly filled a pot with oil, waited for it to come to a simmer- (while she was waiting for it to heat, was she anticipating hearing her husband’s screams?). Will the children be safe with a person capable of doing this?
I also wonder what she will tell her children about the screaming they likely heard. It has been said that the husband was their father. As she makes her excuses to them, will she describe the excruciating pain he suffered when he was burned? Will she tell them of the possibility that he may die? Will she tell them that if he lives, he will have months, possibly years of surgeries and daily pain? Will she tell them that if he lives, he will be severely scarred, and will never look like the father they remember? That the injuries and scarring may be bad enough that he could lose limbs, that the scarring will likely mean he will never be able to move as he used to? Will she tell them she was the cause of their father’s torture and pain? Or will she deem the details too horrible for a child to hear, though not too horrible for a husband to experience.
I don’t know the ages of these children. But I do know that living on the run is hard on kids. The secrecy, the moves, the general instability of the life.
Hopefully, she will be captured soon, and hopefully those kids will be safe.
Police have released the name of the victim, he is Sherman Sanders. Sadly he died from his injures on Fri.
Edna Sanders is still at large, and is believed to be driving a 2001 Pontiac Gran Prix with a retired U.S. Navy license plate. Police have issued a national alert and are asking anyone who may come in contact with or sees her to contact the police department. She is believed to have family in Texas and Louisiana. The charges against her have been upgraded to murder.
Neighbors report they had seen no signs of marital discord between the couple, but that the family kept to themselves. Police say they have no previous reports of domestic violence.
Sherman Sanders was burned so badly, he was unable to dial the phone to summon help. He made it to a car, where he used the car horn to alert neighbors that he needed help.
The FBI is now involved in the search for 45 year old Edna Sanders. It is reported that her maiden name is Miller, and she has 5 children. A brother and sister have spoken to media and say this was not like her. No motive has been determined as yet. Family denys that she has made contact with them. Sanders and the husband that family says she adored had married two years ago.
According to this article, Sanders has two children. No motive as yet, but a family member has said that Sherman Sanders was filing for divorce. The neighbor who found Sherman talks about the events.
The car Edna Sanders was believed to be driving was found at her ex-husband’s address. The two children were also found there.
Sanders’ older brother has told police that Sanders knocked on his door last night. After talking with her for a while, he talked her into turning herself in to police. Sanders has now turned herself in and police are expected to question her later today.
Relatives in Lousiana drove her back to Missippi, where she turned herself in to authorities. Sanders made no statements and requested an attorney.
The children are in their father’s custody
Allegations that Sanders may have been sexually abusive toward Edna May Sanders 13 year old daughter were made in court. The investigator on the case says that they had not found a criminal history on Sanders, but the defense attorney said that may be because the name Sherman Valentino Sanders is what he is currently known by, but that he may have gone by Sherman Valentino in the past.
