“I don’t see how you two can live like this.”

“I don’t see how you two can live like this.” Those are the words spoken by a grandmother. She was speaking to her son, Alfred John Brown, 29, a sheriff’s detention officer after he moved in with her. He and his long time girlfriend had broken it off again after about 7 years of a troubled relationship together. “These two people were super-jealous of each other, sickening jealous,” “They were forever fighting over any little thing.”

She recounted the time that Kathy Chavira, 27, would grip Brown’s jaw. And the time that Brown slapped Chavira and gave her a black eye.

Chavira’s family tells that Kathy Chavira was afraid of Brown. “She was scared, he knew how to manipulate her.”  They say that Chavira had left him several times. But that he would either threaten to take the kids, or would threaten to stop helping her with the child care unless she returned to him. So she did.

She was seen with scratches and bruises on her arms, and the family urged her to file charges on him, but she wouldn’t.

Brown was suspended without pay from his job in July 2004, after he was arrested for a charge of assault-bodily injury of family, but Chavira refused to testify against him. So the charge was dropped and he was reinstated to his position as a jailer.

So the two had split up again recently. And Chavira had a new boyfriend. Chavira’s family says that Brown was aware of the relationship. The new boyfriend was even present when Chavira’s latest child with Brown was born.

Brown surprised the two at Chavira’s apartment last week. Allegedly he told her he loved her and wanted to marry her. His mother says that he came home on Wednesday and he had his two daughters by Chavira, ages 3 months and 6 years. He took a knife and put it in his back pocket, and told his mother that it was over. He had seen Chavira kissing another man.

He then called Chavira at her place of employment and told her that one of the girls was ill. As she came rushing up to the door, Brown met her just outside.

His mother says that she tried to stop him that she kept telling him to stop. But he continued to stab her. He then jumped into his car and sped away.

Chavira died of multiple stab wounds. She was dead at the scene. Hours later Brown called a sheriff’s deputy and arranged to meet him, and be taken into custody.

Brown’s mother says that though the children were in the home, they did not witness their mother’s murder. And she had this to say about the murder: “I’m angry at him for what he did. He didn’t have to kill her,” “He’s going to prison for a long time,” said Bass. “He has to pay for what he did. What else can I say?” “Right now, I don’t know what to say. And I’m afraid to see him, because I’m gonna break up.”

Brown has conditionally pleaded guilty – as long as there is a 50 year cap on his sentence – which he has to serve at least half of:

A former Bexar County detention officer who stabbed to death his estranged girlfriend last year in an apparent fit of jealousy pleaded guilty to murder Monday in an agreement with prosecutors that capped his prison sentence at a maximum of 50 years… “so we could have a for-sure guilty.”… He then called [Kathy] Chavira and said one of their kids had fallen ill. Chavira rushed over, and when she arrived, [Alfred John] Brown began stabbing her… “My parents lost a daughter, my nephews and nieces lost their mother,” Debbie De La Rosa, Chavira’s sister, said. “I lost my sister and my best friend for being selfish. Now (Brown) has his. My life will never be the same without her”…
