Shooting Spree

Jason Howard was on supervised release from prison, where he had served 5 months of a 1 year sentence for domestic violence and violation of protective order. He had been released sometime last year.

Police began looking for Howard as a result of two shootings in which two men were injured, one Wednesday and one Saturday. He is also a suspect in the murder of another man who was found Monday. Howard was located and taken into custody Wednesday after a short standoff with police and has been charged with 2 counts of felonious assault.

Also on Wednesday, his girlfriend’s mother had not heard from her in several days and she and her son went to the girlfriend’s home looking for her. At the home they found the bodies of Jameila West, 27; her daughter, Jameire Ervin, 10; and her sons, Tre’vion Williams, 5, and Jakia Howard, 3, dead from gunshot wounds. Some reports say that the youngest child is a child that West had with Howard. Police believe the family may have been dead for several days, maybe longer.

Howard did not reside with West, but had been going there to visit her and his son.

Police have said that Howard is a person of interest in the murders, and they are attempting to question him. They are not saying if the shootings are connected.

A girlfriend/mother, 3 children, and another man killed, and two others injured from gunshot wounds, and Howard is suspected or charged in all.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions here. How long the family had been dead, what led up to the shootings, and whether the shootings were related. I also wonder who the domestic violence charges were with. The family has reported that Howard and West had known each other a long time and their child was 3 years old, but there is no indication if the previous domestic violence charges were filed by her.

But no matter the reasons, no matter why, 5 people dead including 3 innocent children, and two others injured. And they all seem to center on one man.

The domestic violence that Jason Howard went to prison for was for violence against Jamelia West. Reportedly, West had called police in July of 2004 and stated that Howard grabbed her neck, threw her to the floor and threatened to kill her. He was convicted of domestic violence a protective order was issued, and he was fined. Later the same month West reported that Howard had come to the home, pushed her, tried to smother her with a pillow, and slapped her leg leaving a visable hand print. He was convicted and sent to prison. Howard has also had cocaine convictions in recent years.

The autopsy has been completed on Jamelia and her oldest daughter. According to the coroner, Jamelia had been shot, but 10-year-old Jameire Erwin had been strangled. The initial reports from police said that all of the victims had been shot, but police explain this by the fact that the bodies had begun decomposing. Autopsies are expected to be completed on the two younger children on Friday.

Jamelia’s family says that she never failed to call her father on Father’s day. But this year they never heard from her. The last contact they had with her was a phone call late on Sat.

Police have talked with Howard, but he has not admitted involvement. Police believe the family was killed late on Sat. or early Sun.

Jason Howard spoke out in court today. He told the judge that he was guilty of the felonious assault and the aggravated murder of the men. But he stated he did not kill West or his children, and he asked that they find out who murdered them. Autopsies have been completed on the two youngest children, and the cause of death was determined to be smothering.

A history of the crimes in which he is suspected or accused. Also criminal history.

More on the other crimes.

Jamelia West  and her oldest daughter Jameria Irvin were found in the basement covered with blankets. The two younger boys were found in an upstairs bedroom.

Jason T. Howard has been arrested for the murder of the family. Howard is the ex-boyfriend of Jamelia West, and previously convicted of domestic violence against her. According to police and family, Howard was the father of 3 year old Jakia Howard.

Howard had been previously charged with the murder of two other men, but those charges have been dropped.  He is still charged with the murder of another man.

It is theorized that Jamelia West and her children had been dead for three or four days before their bodies were found.

At a court hearing for Jason Howard two men have been charged with assaulting him (misdemeanor). Reportedly a brother and a cousin began hitting him while he was shackled and at the defense table. According to one article, Jameila’s mother also admitted to “patting” Howard on the back of the head and a deputy grabbed her and put her on the floor. Hearing was rescheduled til 9 am Wednesday, and the judge has said that no one who was involved in the melee will be attending.

Jameila West’s mother said she had a bad back and was taken to the hospital per ambulance.

Though police have charged Jason Howard in the shooting of Jameila West, he was not formally indicted as of Jan. 2007.

In Jan. of 2007 Jason Howard pleaded guilty to the death of David Dally and the shooting of two other men. On the 6 charges that he pleaded guilty to, he was sentenced to 44 years to life in prison. However Howard has continued to deny that he had killed Jameila West or her children.

Why strangle the 10 year old, but shoot everyone else? Isn’t strangling normally thought of as a more personal act of violence? Just wondering.

  2. June 23, 2006 at 11:28 pm

Yes usually. It takes longer, you have to be very close too. I have a theory but it hasn’t been mentioned yet so I don’t know if I am correct.

After seeing the cause of death for the two youngest, my theory doesn’t really seem as realistic. Maybe he couldn’t bear the thought of what the damage would be from a gun, and thus shut off their air, so that they would seem to be ‘sleeping’. Or maybe Howard is telling the truth and he wasn’t the one who killed them. A gun was used on Jamelia, a gun was used on the men, and a gun was found with Howard. Maybe ballistics tests will give a better idea.

Were you thinking sexual abuse? Truthfully, that was my first thought.

  5. June 24, 2006 at 9:07 am

Yes, but now that the boys show a similiar COD, I am not so sure.

All those shootings, in such a short time, and seemingly unrelated. I wonder if he was on a drug at the time.

  7. June 25, 2006 at 3:13 am

I haven’t seen anything that indicates that he was, but he has a history of drug arrests. So chances are good that he was either on a drug or needing a drug. In a couple of the other shootings he reportedly committed robbery. So he evidently needed money for something.

He is a COWARD! A person who is capable of killing three innocent children is a piece of shit to me. Not only killing them, but actually smothering them? You just wait until they stop jumping like fishes for air? That is a person who has no heart, someone that deserves to go to prison, get something shoved up their ass and either rot in jail, or get the chair. He makes me want to puke.

At least her family got to him in court

  10. November 16, 2006 at 11:50 pm

While I understand that may have given the two men some temporary satisfaction, I saw a couple of other things. Additional pain for the family, and two men going to jail. And unfortunately, that could cause hardship or inconvenience for the other family members when they try to attend the court hearings. Also unfortunately, that type of satisfaction won’t help the feelings of pain and loss and won’t bring Jameila and the kids back.

    Stuff happens.

I don’t know who can judge the men.

If he lives, Jason is facing some very difficult prison time.

  12. November 19, 2006 at 11:32 pm

I am not trying to judge. I very well understand their anger, and their need to express their anger. But now they are facing trial, possibly time in jail. So their families will not only be suffering for the loss of Jamelia and her family, they will also be suffering from seeing them in jail, and having to do without them at this time. Some may suffer financial hardships- through loss of work, payment of fines, legal fees and etc. For others it may be a loss of emotional support.
The family will possibly also suffer some hardships at the trial. Some members may not be able to attend. Some members may have to go through additional security measures. If anything additional should develop, there could be more changes at the trial.
So yes, I understand the desire for revenge. But I also see more suffering for the family.

What a sad situation all around. I knew Jamelia personally and she was always a nice and sweet person. I can’t believe Jason is acting like he suddenly got amnesia. I hate the family had to attack him because now they are in legal trouble. So much pain in their lives, let’s just continue to pray for them while they grieve for Jamelia and her children. Jason will get his in prison and when he meets his maker. I’m not judging just stating the obvious.

I don’t know what happened? I don’t want to even think that this man could do that to those children. There are a lot of scenarios. Did he do it or did some one else do it in retaliation? I wasn’t there so I don’t know. I will say this God knows and believe you me he isn’t please with taking the life of his most precious souls. I will pray for the family of the victim and the accused, because it is a tragedy all the way round especially if they shared a child together. I am certain his family is feeling the lost for their family and him as well it is sad. May God Bless and Strengthen all of them during this sad time.

this west family was my aunt and my 3 cousins. Jamiere was like my sister and i miss her very much. a lot of people have a dout on weather or not Jason Howard did or not but I do and always will beleive that he did it. And if he dosen’t deal with jail time for doing this he defenitley will have to deal with God. And I dont care if something is wrong with you i dont beleive that it gives you the boost to go take someones life away. My Aunt Jamie,Jamiere,Tre, and Jakia were so close with our family. They were the ones that baiscally lite it up and made everybody smile when it could be the saddest moment. And i remember jamiere lovin hot chettos. Thats all we used to eat. And my Aunt Jamie even thought my brother wasn’t her blood nephew she still bought him things for his birthday and christmas. And what can i say about Tre and Jakia, they both were very shy but once they got used to them you couldn’t get them quiet. They were the cuitest little boys ever. I remember when Tre couldn’t even talk. He was so fat and cute with his little braids!!!And Jakia was like an angel on earth. when jamiere wouldnt feel good he would always try to take care of her. i love and miss my family so much and nothing anybody says will bring them back.
    R.I.P triple Jt!!!

Does anyone have an update on this case? I knew Jason in high school and he was always a personable kid. You knew he had some rough edges but I never thought he was capable of something like this.

  19. February 3, 2008 at 10:33 pm

That was a good question Lamar and I didn’t know. I was able to find one article about the trial for the death of the man and the shooting of two others. But it looks as though as of Jan. 2007 he has not been indicted for the deaths of Jameila West and her three children.

Any other update? I am wondering if he ever got indicted for the death of the Columbus family. Really sad. My guess is that he will end up on Death Row.

I miss you all so much Jamie, Jamiere, Tre,& Jakai!! It’s been almost four years and it hurts just as bad. Jamie was like the little sister I always wanted. Even though her brother and I didn’t stay together, we are all still close family. Everyone handles this in their own way. I put my head in the sand and try and block it out. I try to distance myself from those that I love that were close to them as well so we don’t have to talk about what happened. Except my daughters who were Jamie’s nieces. God please show me the right way to handle this. When it’s my time to go, let me see my loved ones again. God please let Lou, Roy, Vicki, & Boopie have peace in their hearts

Whatever happened to jason? Was he convicted of the crimes? I hope so. I cannot even begin to imagine what he family had to go through. I hope they have found some peace even though all they want is to have their loved ones back. I hope your ex was charged and if he was those guards should of let him go a litte more at Jason. He is cruel and unfeeling if he did that. There is no excuse, not drugs, nothing, He deserves to burn in hell if he is guilty. I have tried to find out what happened. If you know, do you mind sharing it? Thanks. And again I am sorry for the pain you guys had to go through.

I am sorry, I made a typo, I meant to say “the family had to go through” and also I hope your ex wasn’t charged.
